The presence of chemical compounds as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in domestic wastewater represents a problem for the treatment plants. Some of these compounds are difficult to degrade using microbiological processes. This paper reports the kinetics of the degradation of three representative pharmaceuticals drugs: diclofenac, sildenafil, and paracetamol using UV and ozone alone or combined. The results show significant differences in reaction rates when using ozone alone or with UV compared with UV alone. Although the main intermediates of the three degradation compounds were detected, the experiments show that the use of UV generates different initial reaction paths that affect the final products and the total oxidation capacity of the reagents studied.
