IHY2007: Science in Latin America

Although traditional ideas about the Sun-Earth system are usually associated with separate physical domains the Sun the heliosphere the interplanetary medium the magnetosphere the ionosphere and the different regions of the neutral atmosphere the present attitude is to treat this system as a set of interrelated physical processes The International Heliophysical Year 2007 provides the appropriate framework to combine efforts in our region towards the understanding of this complex coupled system We describe the research interests and available instrumentation of scientific groups in the region that have expressed their interest in participating and collaborating in research activities within the framework of IHY 2007 We discuss the degree of organization we have achieved so far proposed and already sponsored projects within the United Nations Basic Space Science Initiative e g South American Very Low Frequency Network participating countries Brazil Argentina and Peru our efforts to join groups to present new projects e g possibly a magnetometer network implementation of the regional Web page and our planned future meetings both scientific and of coordination.
