The NaturalProtectedAreaSanAntoniobayisofparticularimportanceforitscongregationofmigratoryshorebirdsandithasbeendeclaredoneoftheWesternHemisphereShorebirdReserveNetworkInter-national site(WHSRN).Presentstudyrepresentsthe first assessmentofvariationonoxidativestressbiomarkers inmalecrab Neohelice granulata from SanAntoniobay(RíoNegro,Argentina)under fieldconditions, associatedmainlytometalcontaminationcomingfrompassiveminingwastes.ThreesitesweresampledonceeverythreemonthsfromNovember2012toAugust2013withinthisseainlet(Pile,Fishery andPort)andacontrolsiteatthesoutheastofthebay(PuntaPerdices).AccumulationofNi,Zn,Cr andAlvariedonlywithseasonsalthoughwithoutaconstanttrend,meanwhileCd,CuandPbalsovariedamongsitesbeinghighestinPileandPort.Biochemicalresultsindicatedthatvariationsincatalaseactivity wasonlysitespecific beingmaximuminPile;meanwhilelipidradical, α-tocopherol andme-tallothioneins wereonlyseasonalspecific beinghigherinautumnandwinter.Seasonalvariationwasalsofound fortotalthioles,beingthecontenthigherinsummerandautumnthaninwinter.Correlationanalysisrevealedthatmalondialdehydeand α-tocopherolhaveapositiveassociationwithAlandne-gativewithNi,meanwhileGSThasapositiveassociationwithFe.Crabsfromtheclosestareatothewastepile didnotexhibitadifferentiatedoxidativepressuredespitethehigheraccumulationofmetals.Itispossible thatcrabsfromcontaminatedareashavedevelopedatolerancetometals,indicatingastrongecotoxicologicalselectivepressure.Morestudiesareneededtoassesswhetherthereisatransferofmetals throughthefoodchain.
