Resumen:
Abstract One potential way of reducing feeding cost in aquaculture is to take advantage of the compensatory growth. In this study the effect of intermittent feeding on compensatory growth in juveniles stage III of Cherax quadricarinatus was evaluated The protocol consisted of alternate periods of feeding and starvation until moulting to stage IV, followed by a refeeding period. Juveniles were divided into eight treatments of intermittent feeding and two controls. After the first moult, the growth increment (% GI) and specific growth rate (SGR) were significantly lower than CF (continuous feeding) only in AI1 (one day fed followed by one day starved). At 15 and 30 days, the GI and SGR showed not differences in relation to CF. Survival were significantly lower in CS (continuous starvation), AI1 and AI5 at the end of experiment. The juveniles compensate as a response to intermittent feeding when they receive food for at least two days.
