From End-of-pipe to Inside-the-pipe: A Learning Process in Environmental Management in Argentine Industry

The main purpose of this paper is to gain a deeper knowledge of Argentine manufacturing firms' environmental management (EM) and especially to learn about the interactions between EM and innovation and technological modernization activities. With this objective, two surveys were carried out between the end of 1996 and mid-1997. One of them comprised 32 large firms and the other involved 120 SMEs. Their findings are the main source of information for this paper. Whenever possible those findings are compared with other information on the Argentine firms' industry environmental performance. Data from a survey made in 2002, which aimed at gathering information on technological issues but also contained some questions on environmental management in the manufacturing industry, were also employed.
