We undertake an econometric analysis of the determinants of the export performance of Argentine manufacturing firms in the period 1998-2001 on the basis of information from the national innovation survey (INDEC-SECYT-CEPAL, 2003). In particular, our interest was in studying whether or not launching innovations new to the market has a positive impact on export performance. We were also interested in learning if the impact of innovation on exports varies according to differing factor and technological intensities across sectors. In this regard, innovation activities might be expected to have a stronger influence in medium and high-tech sectors vis-à-vis low-tech, labor-intensive or natural-resource-based branches.
