Resumen:
This paper is going to analize the Southern African’s profound political crises linked, on the one hand, to the decolonization process and, on the other, to the play of powerful forces unleashed in the struggle between the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, for influence in the region. Co-operation in sub-Saharan Africa may not appear to have much chance of success, given the existing economic disparities and inequalities combined with a natural tendency to resolve problems in isolation. But there aren´t many alternatives that can achieve economic access to the new millennium´s global economy. And the Southern African region appears, from its history and its potential, to be positioned to move along the road of co-operation towards integration. The combined capacities of these countries could be a useful tool enabling them to emerge as global competitors and win prosperity for their people.
