Resumen:
Social and economic inequality has proven to be one of the most persistent traits of the Latin American region since independence. Inequality, in turn, has been consistently held to be one of the main obstacles to consolidate the rule of law in the region. This much is generally accepted. But how exactly are socio-economic inequality and the rule of law connected? Why do we observe variation in the region, both across time within countries and across countries, in the levels of law enforcement and citizens? compliance if the socio-economic structure has remained mostly constant, especially in some countries? Alternatively, what is the likely impact of recent changes in the socio-economic structure of some countries on the enforcement of, and compliance with, the law?
