What does contemporary Latin American Society look like? What are the main changes it has experienced compared to the recent past? These are the book’s central questions. In answering them, the book introduces current debates in issues such as demographic structure, income and inequality, labor market, public health, education and housing, social classes and mobility, gender, violence, and territory. The text’s aim, in brief, is to depict, in a concise way, a general overview of the current state of Latin American society, addressing an audience of students, professionals, and the general public at large. The period the book focuses on is the new millennium. Its research is based on studies that describe general trends and public policies in each of the aforementioned topics. The book describes regional tendencies, but it is likewise attentive to the particularities of the different countries. It is organized in four sections and it includes an introduction and a conclusion. The first section exposes demographic processes (population, family, migrations.) The second section offers an overview of the changes taking places in questions of inequality and social classes. The third section focuses on education, public health, and housing. Finally, the fourth section chooses three central issues of today: gender, violence, and discussions of development models. In each of these topics emphasis is placed in their impact on contemporary Latin American society in general and the challenges they present to its future.
