Chemical and functional characterization of the essential oil of Lippia junelliana, an aromatic plant native from Argentina

The skin is a very extensive and complex tissue that interacts with a hostile environment and that has a wide range of functions. Between them, it retains a large amount of water, but experiences moisture losses due to normal aging processes and much of the external trauma to which the skin is constantly subjected. A key molecule involved in skin moisture is hyaluronic acid (HA) with its associated hydration water.In recent years there has been an increase in interest in new natural sources of essential oils with biological activities, due to their possible beneficial effects on health, mainly for pathologies related to oxidative and aging processes. It is universally recognized that these mechanisms impact the physiology of the skin by changing the evolution and organization of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, in particular by the action of hyaluronidase and elastase.The objective of this work was to study the use of the essential oil of the "salvialora" as an agent to counteract well recognized skin aging factors and analyze its chemical composition.The essential oil was extracted from leaves of Lippia junelliana (Mold.) Tronc. (salvialora) native to Taninga, Traslasierra, Córdoba and cultivated in the INTA-Castelar, by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger type trap. The quali-quantitative composition was analyzed by CG-FID-MS. The antihyaluronidase and antielestase capacity was determined spectrophotometrically. The amount of N-acetylglucosamine produced from potassium hyaluronate and p-nitroanilide produced from N-succinyl-ala-ala-ala-p-nitronilide, respectively was determined. In all cases the 50% Inhibitory Concentration (IC50) was determined as the concentration of essential oil necessary to produce 50% inhibition of enzymatic activity.The yield of essential oil was 1.66% (P / V). The 97% of the total essential oil was identified. Among the main components of the volatile fraction were: cis + trans-ocimenone (29.7%), mircenone (14.0%), myrcene (8.0%), β-caryophyllene (7.7%) and spatulenol (6.0%).It was found that the antihyalurionidase activity was not significant in the essential oil, however, a significant antielastase activity was observed with IC50 of 46 mg / ml.The essential oils are natural products that provide not only aroma to a cosmetic formulation but can also present other functional activities as like antiaging.
