Resumen:
As a topic deeply scrutinised by historiography, the conversion of the Visigoths toCatholicism in 589 has been analysed and interpreted under several different perspectives.This article considers a specific problem within the broader issue, focusing onthe attitude adopted by Pope Gregory I upon hearing about the conversion. In turn,it assesses the way he acted towards the king who promoted the religiouschange, Reccared. The core of the analysis will be set on the exchange of presentsthat took place between the monarch and the pontiff to commemorate the event. Itis argued that the gifts ratified the tie established between them, and, moreover, thateach was embedded with a specific symbology.
