The design of a chemical process is a creative, ill-defined and very complex task, which is poorly understood. One long-term goal of this project is to get a better understanding of the design process and to make this knowledge available in the form of a computer-support tool. The elaboration of a model of the design process itself should be the first step towards the development of any computer environment able to support synthesis and design activities. In consequence, the proposal of a design process model is the main goal of the present project. To attain this goal, two prerequisites have to be fulfilled. First the knowledge about design processes has to be acquired, secondly a modeling language has to be developed which is capable of formalizing all relevant aspects. These two tasks are being addressed in this project as well.
