Resumen:
All coralsnakes are venomous and their venom is potentially lethal in accidents with humans, but accidents are rare and not always with a condition of inoculation of venom enough to cause a classic clinical condition. However, we can list species of greater probability of encounters with humans, according to two situations. First, in urban areas of higher population density, but with some contact with preserved areas. Second, in advance of agropastoral border areas. This is clear in the dimension of the importance of these accidents that are directed mainly to the species M. corallinus and M. frontalis, common in southeastern Brazil, but also with M. pyrrhocryptus in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. Also, we need to keep in perspective that with the territorial dimension of Brazil a considerable number of snakebite accidents and positive snake identification are not reported or neglected. Thus, the intention is to offer features for a quick identification of more common species of coralsnakes in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay and more frequent in human accidents. In addition to these situations, we also must be based on cases of accidents reported in historical series.
