Resumen:
Quorum sensing (QS) systems, which have been observed in gram-negative bacteria symbiotically associated with plants, use N-acyl-homoserine lactones as signaling molecules or autoinducers. When the growth of the bacterial population reaches a certain number, the extracellular concentration of these molecules increases, and they may thus be sensed by bacteria and enable a range of functions that facilitate multicellular life. QS mechanisms are therefore a window into the understanding of bacteria-plant interactions. In this chapter, we review the QS mechanisms used by rhizobacteria and by legume-associated bacteria, with a particular focus on findings related to QS inhibitors produced by plants and microorganisms.
