Abstract The aim of the present work is to compare the reliability on mappings of several variational indicators of chaos: the Lyapunov Indicator, the Mean Exponential Growth factor of Nearby Orbits, the Smaller Alignment Index, the Fast LyapunovIndicator, the Dynamical Spectra of stretching numbers and the corresponding SpectralDistance and the Relative Lyapunov Indicator, which is based on the evolution of the difference of two close orbits.    The experiments presented allow us to suggest with confident a group of chaosindicators among the studied to analyze a general mapping. We show that a package composed of the FLI and the RLI for global analysis of the phase portrait, and the MEGNO and the SALI for analysis of singular orbits, is enough to make a complete and certain description of the systems’ dynamics.
