This paper presents the first results concerning the study of fish bone remains in archaeological sites of southern Mendoza. Two  main objectives have guided this study: 1. To evaluate the importance given to fishes  for subsistence by human populations living in that space; 2. To examine the relationship between  zooarchaelogical fish assemblages composition and distributional and abundance conditions of these resources,  in a regional scale. As a first approach to this topic, there are presented the obtained results for the sites of La Olla, RA 1, EB3 and 5 (Middle Atuel) and Llan 17 and 22 (Llancanelo Lagoon). The taxonomical and anatomical compositions of the bone assemblages are examined. Related to discussions about native or introduced species, new study perspectives are drawn up, considering its relevance for protected areas management.
