Resumen:
In many regions throughout the western hemisphere, the middle Holocene (approximately 8000 to 4000 years ago) has been described as generally warmer and drier than the preceding period, yet punctuated by significant, abrupt climatic fluctuations. Human responses to changing environments are varied in their expression, which makes the volatile middle Holocene an appropriate laboratory for studying mechanisms of culture change. Archaeologists working in areas characterised by variable middle Holocene climates have offered many insightful interpretations of behavioural strategies during that time. We believe that these interpretations can both inform and be informed by multinational discussions intended to clarify human behavioural adaptation, considering a broad set of factors that may not be visible at the local level.
