Resumen:
The Loncopué Trough is located in the retroarc area of Neuquén between 36°30’ and 39° S. This chapter focuses in the southern part of the depression where an extensional orogenic front is preserved at present time. The extensional structures are affecting the western part of the Agrio fold and thrust belt, were two main compressive regimes were developed: the first one in Late Cretaceous and the last one in Late Miocene. Based on geophysical data it was possible to reconstruct the deep geometry of the trough. A series of larger isolated depocenters that shows thicknesses more than 8 kilometers are located beneath the main fault systems that control the geometry of the depression at surface. The orogenic collapse started on Pliocene times and extent to the present. Older extensional structures related to the opening of the Neuquen and Cura Mallín basins in the Triassic and in the Oligocene are controlling the position of the main fault systems at the Loncopué trough.
