Resumen:
Neogene synorogenic strata are widespread through the territory of Neuquén Province. They comprehend late Oligocene to Early Miocene synextensional strata exposed in the highest Andes and in the foothills of the Cordillera Principal, spatially associated with onlapping sequences drowning contractional structures produced by late Miocene compression. They are also present to the east hosted in late Cretaceous to Eocene structures mildly reactivated in late Miocene times. Pliocene to Quaternary extensional relaxation of the fold and thrust belt allowed the accumulation of thick packages of volcaniclastic sequences mainly hosted in the hinterland zone of the cordillera. Finally, the Cordillera Principal in northwestern Neuquén was reactivated by contraction producing synorogenic wedge packages through a narrow corridor next to the drainage divide area.
