Anticancer and Antimetastatic Activity of VOflavonoids. Mechanisms of Action

Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds widely distributed in fruits, vegetables, plant extracts as well as in plant-derived beverages such as tea and red wine. These compounds have long been recognized to possess antioxidant, antiallergenic,antiviral, antiinflammatory, anticancer, vasodilating actions and estrogenic effects and behave as inhibitors of some enzymes. So, the dietary intake of these natural products is considered crucial for preventing a wide variety of diseases that involve free-radical mediated damage.1Vanadiumis an important trace element for different organisms. Thecoordination chemistry of vanadium has been receiving increasing interest since it was found to be beneficial in various biological systems.2As part of a project devoted to establish the anticancer and antimetastatic properties of flavonoids and the potential improvement of their behavior upon structural modifications, we have synthesized and characterized several coordination compounds of flavonoids with the oxidovanadium(IV) cation: VOquer, VOhesp, VOchrys,VOsil, VOmor, VOnar, VOlut, VOdios, VObaic (where quer:quercetin, hesp:hesperidin, chrys:chrysin, sil:sylibinin, mor:morin, nar:naringenin, lut:luteolin, dios:diosmin, baic:baicalin).
