Resumen:
The highly fossiliferous Pirabas Fm. represents the southern part of "Neogene Tropical America", a biogeographical unit developed prior to the closure of the Central American Seaway by the isthmus of Panama. Until now, the age of the Pirabas Fm was inferred only by biostratigraphy. The Sr-isotope ( 87Sr/86 Sr) values of pectinid shells obtained by us show that most parts of this unit were deposited during the late Burdigalian (about 16-17 ma ). This result do not contradict biostratigraphic data, whilst constraining the age of the Pirabas Fm. more tightly, allowing future more precise biogeographical comparisons.
