Resumen:
Objective: To compare the first year of life neonatal outcomes of pregnancies with pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) with those of normotensive pregnancies. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on normal pregnancies and with PIH during 2010 at the Hospital Posadas, Buenos Aires. Medical data of the newborn from the birth to their first year of life as collected checking medical records. Results: We analyzed 204 pregnancies with PIH and 147 normotensive pregnancies. 20% of newborns from hypertensive mothers were hospital inpatient and 1.5% died, while only 8% of newborns from normotensive mothers were hospital inpatient and 0.7% died. Conclusions: Our results suggest that newborns from mothers with PIH have more risk to suffer diseases which need hospital inpatient during their first year of life than normotensive mothers. Thus, a hypertensive environment by itself might induce a susceptibility to neonates, regardless of the severity of the hypertensive disease.
