Resumen:
An association between elevated serum uric acid levels and preeclampsia has been known since the beginning of the 20 century but its clinical utility is still debated. Although the causes of hyperuricemia and its specific role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, remain unclear, it is considered by many authors as a marker of the severity of the maternal syndrome The focus of the present study was to evaluate serum uric acid levels in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia before and after the onset of the clinic manifestations. Our purpose is to determine changes in serum uric acid level during the course of the pregnancy in order to postulate that periodical serum uric acid measures may be useful as an early biomarker involved in predicting the onset of preeclampsia. We conducted a case-control study of 30 controls and 30 women with preeclampsia. Serum uric acid, urea and creatinine were measured before and after the 20th week of gestation. We found no significant differences in serum uric acid levels between normotensive and preeclamptic pregnant women before the 2oth weeks of gestation. Although serum uric acid levels were always between normal value ranges, in preeclamptic women, we observed a notably increase between the 20th and 30th weeks of gestation [(2.98 ± 0.36)mg/dL vs (4.58 ± 1.34 )mg/dL; p
