Resumen:
Time relationships are of paramount importance to properly understanding geological history. Hence, it is likewise fundamental the inference of synchronicity and non-synchronicity which can be deduced using different lines of evidence. Some of these are more reliable than others, and some may be confusing, insufficient or contradictory. Palaeontological event markers which are currently used in modern stratigraphical approaches are reviewed in this context. A series of selected examples taken from own experience (mainly on bivalves and brachiopods) as well as from the literature, are given to illustrate these points.
