Stable diffraction gratings in an azobenzene functionalized copolymer

   A novel poly(styrene-alt-acrylic acid) copolymer functionalized with an azobenzene derivative was synthesized. It was demonstrated that this material presents optical anisotropy under irradiation at an absorbing wavelength of the azo-dye moiety. Furthermore, the formation of diffraction gratings on the volume of material, based on a photoinduced modulation of the refractive index, was studied and shown to be highly stable.
