Resumen:
In this work, Co-based catalysts supported on a CeO2-SiO2 mixed oxide were synthesized using ethylene glycol-modified SiO2 (Co/CeO2-SiO2 (EG)). The catalytic properties of this material were compared with the unfunctionalized material (Co/CeO2-SiO2) in the ethanol steam reforming reaction for hydrogen production. Both catalysts were synthesized by the incipient wetness impregnation method, using cobalt acetate as the precursor of the active phase. The cobalt composition used in both materials was 15 % w/w and the mass composition of CeO2 used for the support was 10%. The catalytic activity was evaluated at 500 °C using an ethanol/water mixture with a molar ratio of 5. The results showed an improvement in the activity of the functionalized material, maintaining 100% conversion during 7 hours of reaction. In contrast, the unfunctionalized catalyst showed a decrease of 14%. The yield to hydrogen obtained with Co/CeO2-SiO2 (EG) showed an increase of 51% with respect to the unfunctionalized material, obtaining a stream free of oxygenated compounds (ethylene and acetaldehyde). Finally, the catalysts were characterized by different techniques such as XPS, Raman Spectroscopy, TEM and XRD, where the crystalline phases of Co3O4 and CeO2 were detected in both materials.
