Resumen:
Chewing lice of the suborder lschnocem found or possible to be found in Argentina arc reviewed. A brief chamcterization of the suborder and its three families, all them with Argentinean representatives, ls provided. A total of 606 species in 106 genera are cited, giving a checklist of the species and their representative avian or mammal hosts known to date. Within these lice, only three have been described from a single specimen, six from two, one from three, and the remaining from over four specimens. The importance of the knowledge and systematic descriptions of eggs and nymphal instars, as well as comparative studies, is emphasized. Comments are given on their sanitary importance as vectors of mkroorgamisms, including filarioidean and tapeworms responsible of severe diseases in birds and mamnmls, along with considerations of their role as strcss-causing in caged hosts, and economical losses that they may cause in husbandry and domesticated birds and mammals. An analysis of the diversity or this suborder on different bird and mammal hosts represented in Argentina led to the conclusion that the most signiflcant number of species to be discovered are within the binrd orders Passcriformes, Pidformes, and Falconiformes; and within the mammal Carnivoran families.
