Measurement in social sciences can be quantitative or qualitative. Measurement is a pivotal term in quantitative research since it provides the link between empirical observation and theoretical constructs. Data is obtained by coding events into numbers, following certain rules of allocation. This procedure is generally accomplished through standardized instruments in the form of tests, questionnaires, and scales which adhere to specific standards of reliability and validity.
