Resumen:
A search for bioactive compounds, inhibitors of Paenibacillus larvae, the causal agent of the honeybees disease American foulbrood was carried on. The extracts of two strains, Alternaria brassicicola and Alternaria raphani, isolated from pollen from beehives exhibited a specific activity against this bacterium. From these extracts and by means of chromatographic steps and a bioassay-guided fractionation, tetramic acids were isolated. The compounds were identified by spectroscopic methods and the absolute stereochemistry was chemically determined. L-tenuazonic acid was responsible for the antibiotic activity. The bioactivity of this compound is comparable with that of oxytetracycline, used nowadays for prevention of American foulbrood.
