Resumen:
The available information on the snakes of the South American Chaco is summarized. For each species, information on taxonomy, habitat preferences, feeding, conservation status and a distribution map are included. In total, 63 species and subspecies belonging to 30 genera and 6 families are listed. Nine taxa (5 species and 4 subspecies) are endemic to the Chaco. Other seven (3 species  and 4 subspecies) are mostly restricted to the Chaco region. Five species are included in CITES Appendices I and II: all the Boidae species and two Colubridae species. Snake diversity in the Chaco shows a predominant east-west decreasing gradient (related to rainfall) and a secondary, less marked north-south gradient (which follows a temperature gradient).
