Occurrence of bacteria with technological and probiotic potential in Argentinian human breast-milk.

Breast milk providesessential nutrients and defenses to the infant´s gut but also cultivable and non-cultivablemicrobes. Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria occur naturally in breast milk andthey are known for being beneficial for the neonate development and well-being.The aim of this study was to isolate lactobacilli from breast milk samplescollected in Argentina, focusing on those isolates with promissory functionaland technological potential for the development of new probiotics. Fourteenlactobacilli and one bifidobacteria [AB1] isolates were obtained from164 breast milk samples donated by 104 mothers. The L. gasseri strains (70a and 70c) and L. plantarum strains (73a and 73b) isolated deserve further studies aspotential probiotics because of their capacity to induce the release of IL-10from murine macrophages and their high hydrophobicity. All the strains, exceptfor L. gallinarum 94d, showedsatisfactory survival to freeze-drying and long-term (12 months) storage at 5°C. Lactose and polydextrose were satisfactory protectants for thetechnological application of these strains.
