Resumen:
In this work we present FTIR studies of the interaction of a promising chemo preventive and protective agent, S-methyl methanethiosulfonate (MMTS), with model systems of a lipid bilayer (liposomes). The purpose of this study was to investigate hydrocarbon conformation in the hydrocarbon region in 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine(DPPC) liposomes. We present the FTIR spectroscopy study of the effect caused by this interaction on the organization of the hydrocarbon chains of the lipid bilayer. These studies revealed changes in the lipid population which resulted in increased packing in the hydrocarbon chains of the DPPC in the presence of MMTS, correlating with2the previous MD results. FTIR spectroscopy was used to observe the methylene group wagging modes in the 1300-1400 cm-1 spectral region. The areas of these bands were proportional to the probability of occurrence of bond sequences in specific gauche/trans conformations along a hydrocarbon chain. The interaction of MMTS with the lipid bilayer produces a structural change in the hydrophobic region of the same. This can be interpreted as a conformational change of the hyrocarbon chains produced by steric interactions
