Resumen:
The possibility of producing cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) from a forest residue, usually not suitable for high-end applications, was investigated. Pine stumps were subjected to different processes (steam explosion, organosolv, alkaline treatment and bleaching) in order to disrupt the cellulose structure and make them more suitable for the CNF production. In this matter, a soft TEMPO-mediated oxidation, followed by only 2 passes in a high-pressure homogenizer, conducted to a highly charged CNF, with high fibrillation yield and very small polymer chains. However, the aforementioned conditions proved not to be the most adequate for strength enhancement in papermaking, since a CNF produced in the same conditions but from industrial pine pulp led to higher improvements. Nonetheless, the CNF obtained should have great potential for other applications.
