Resumen:
Acorn volume and geographical range were positively correlated in a study of 28 Atlantic and 10 out of 11 Californian oak species. Two hypotheses which may account for this relationship - size-dependent dispersal and niche availability as a function of seed food reserves - are discussed, and it is suggested that the niche-related hypothesis best explains the observed patterns.
