Resumen:
Visual images have been used in the archaeological research since almost the origin of archaeology as an academic discipline, by the end of XIX century. Interestingly, despite of this use of the images mainly through the photography there has no been a critical analysis of the visual image as an analytical tool in the archaeological research process until the recent years. The increasingly availability of the new technologies (such as multimedia, digital cameras, and Internet resources) in the last years has led to a new re-discover of the role of the image in the archaeological research. In this essay we discuss the use of the visual image as an analytical tool in two differents  enviroments such as the archaeological research process itself, and the exhibitions and presentations of archaeological materials in museums. Additionally, a reflexive discussion is given concerning the political and sociological implications the archaeological museums have in constructing  official histories and the role of the public opinion in these matters.
