Comparative statistics like these are essentialfor policy-related social research. Among all the contributions that the WorldSocial Protection Data and Dashboard, its contribution to the analysis ofsocial protection coverage stands out. Particularly important has been thedistinction between formal and effective coverage especially for middle andlow-income countries, where the gap between what the legislation establishesand what the population effectively gets can be large due to informal labormarkets and other access barriers. Thanks to these data we now know a lot moreabout coverage, including scope, extent, and gaps across social securitybranches and across countries. This talk explains why these data are vital forpolicy oriented social research, highlights its main contributions and suggestspossible routes for expansion that would be particularly relevant foragender-sensitive and policy-oriented social policy research agenda.
