Resumen:
The variable ?days of stay? is frequently used to evaluate hospital performance. This paper aims to characterize it statistically in adult patient admitted to a Municipal Hospital of Bahia Blanca city (Argentina) for four diagnoses prevalent from January 2004 through December 2009. It is noted that the mean presents greater variability than the median in all diseases. For this, we recommend the use of M-estimators as a measure of central tendency. These are useful to build ?average stay? indicators that represent more clearly the central value of the variable.
