Resumen:
Nowadays, the significant progress of energy storage technologies makes possible to include these new devices in the power system. Moreover, power electronics devices based on Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) using power converters permit to independently exchange active and reactive power with the utility grid when they are combined with energy storage systems (ESS). This allows to perform a more effective primary frequency control (PFC) and also to reduce the reserve power of the units. In this article, a detailed model is proposed of a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) coupled with a Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) coil for applications on primary frequency control of the power system. Furthermore, a control algorithm for both devices is presented. Dynamic systems simulation is used to study the performance of the proposed models by using a test system with a three-phase fault and a tie-line tripping.
