Cities, Capitalism and the Politics of Sensibilities

In the context of the ancient and close connection between city and emotions, between cities and sensibilities, this chapter intends to present, in a synthetic way, three moments that can be observed in the presence of sensibilities in the cities of this century: the politics of senses, the shopping center as a cathedral of consumption and the features of the city 4.0. Here we are interested in configuring an approach to the moral imperatives of feeling nested in the politics of the sensibilities of a city understood as the center of normalized societies in immediate enjoyment through consumption. The following argumentative strategy has been selected as the narrative structure: first, the connection between the politics of the senses and the structuring of the city is presented schematically; second, a redescription of shopping is offered as the founding space of the political economy of the morale of the city and thirdly, the central features of the city 4.0 and the elaboration of a platform sensibility are outlined. The chapter ends with a reflection on the city as a place for utopia
