Resumen:
Shigatoxin-producingEscherichiacoli(STEC)causesserioushumanillnesssuchashemolyticuremicsyndrome(HUS).Argentinahastheworld?shighestrateofthissyn-drome,whichistheleadingcauseofacuterenalfailureamongchildren.E.coliO157:H7isthemostcommoncauseofHUS,butasubstantialandgrowingproportionofthisillnessiscausedbyinfectionduetonon-O157strains.Multiple-locusvariable-numbertandemrepeatanalysis(MLVA)hasbecomeanestablishedtechniquetosubtypeSTEC.ThisreviewwilladdresstheuseofroutineSTECsubtypingbyMLVAinordertotypethisgroupofisolatesandtogetinsightintothegeneticdiversityofnativeSTEC.WithregardtotheseobjectiveswemodifiedandadaptedtwoMLVAprotocols,oneexclusiveforO157andtheother,agenericE.coliassay.Atotalof202STECisolates,fromdifferentsourcesandcorrespond-ingto20serotypes,havebeenMLVAgenotypedinourlaboratory.Inourexperience,MLVAconstitutesaverysensitivetoolandenablesustoperformanefficientSTECsubtyping.ThediversityfoundinmanyserotypesmaybeusefulforfutureepidemiologicalstudiesofSTECclonality,appliedtoO157aswellastonon-O157isolates.
