Resumen:
TheShiga-toxinproducingEscherichiacoli(STEC)maycauseseriousillnessinhuman.HereweanalyzeO26:H11strainsknowntobeamongthemostreportedSTECstrainscausinghumaninfections.Geneticcharacterizationofstrainsisolatedfromanimal,food,andclinicalspecimensinArgentinashowedthatmostcarriedeitherstx1aorstx2asubtypes.Interestingly,stx2a-positiveO26:H11rarelyisolatedfromcattleinothercountriesshowedtobeanimportantproportionofO26:H11strainscirculatingincattleandfoodinourregion.Seventeenpercentoftheisolatesharboredmorethanonegeneassociatedwithantimicrobialresistance.Inadditiontostx,allstrainscontainedthevirulencegeneseae-b,tir,efa,iha,espB,cif,espA,espF,espJ,nleA,nleB,nleC,andiss;andallexceptonecontainedehxA,espP,andcbagenes.Ontheotherhand,toxBandespIgeneswereexclusivelyobservedinstx2-positiveisolates,whereaskatPwasonlyfoundinstx1a-positiveisolates.OurresultsshowthatO26:H11STECstrainscirculatinginArgentina,includingthoseisolatedfromhumans,cattle,andmeatproducts,presentahighpathogenicpotential,andevidencethatcattlecanbeareservoirofO26:H11strainsharboringstx2a.
