Resumen:
Diversity of phytoplankton and periphyton from the Río de la Plata was assesed along a reach of 120 km of the coast and up to 10 km off shore. Most of the data were collected between 1993-2000, and old records were also considered. The principal natural substratum for periphyton is Schoenoplectus californicus.Turbidity, seasonal changes and discharge, along with the pollution due to the intense human activity in this area, are the determinant factors for the algae in this zone. Number of species, composition, density and diversity were lower as the distance off the coast increased.
