This chapter focuses on the materiality of art in archaeological research. It presents a theoretical perspective that breaks from the cartesian mind-body split and widens the straightforward association between art, symbolism and ideology, by proposing instead a three-dimensional framework that engages art with technology, economy and cognition. Firstly the chapter develops a) concepts related to the economic factors involved in art production, b) a discussion of optimality models, c) an art production sequence model focused on the technical, economic and cognitive factors which underlie it, and d) criteria required to asses labour investment in art production. Secondly, it synthesises several methodological elements relevant to the data analysis of archaeological art materials. And finally, it applies the theoretical framework in the development of a model to research the temporal-spatial rhythms of change of art motifs and techniques, which aim to assess the conditions under which these vary in a synchronized or non-synchronized manner.
