Resumen:
In recent decades there has been a notable growth in the amount of Waste Electrical and ElectronicEquipment (WEEE), which are considered special waste by MAyDS Resolution No. 522/2016. Theplastic fraction of WEEE (WEEEP) represents approximately 25 % of the total by weight, and dueto its heterogeneous composition and the presence of toxic pollutants (mainly brominated flameretardants (BFRs) and heavy metals) it has not been able to be inserted in circuits of appropriaterecycling.The addition of plastics to mortars has been extensively studied, obtaining materials with technicalaptitude for use in construction. This led to the consideration, by local enterprises and even scientific reports, of the use of the WEEEP as an aggregate, in total and/or partial replacement of the natural aggregate. Previous studies by our team have shown that this approach does not prevent the leaching of contaminants and results in poor and unhealthy technology.A core-shell type recycled plastic aggregate (RPA) was developed, consisting of an WEEEP corecoated with successive layers of cement and stabilizing additives. The RPA developed showedphysical, chemical and morphological characteristics that make it suitable for adding to mortarswithout risk to health. In this work, the manufactured components and the primary results of a hazardous waste revaluation technology are presented in a responsible, safe and low-cost manner.
