Resumen:
The use of hydrogen as energy vector presents different challenges to the scientific community, among them the development of cost-effective, lasting and safe hydrogen-energy storage systems. Solid-state hydrogen storage as hydride compounds provides a prominent method regarding efficiency and safety. Transition complex hydrides such as Mg2CoH5 and Mg2FeH6 are attractive materials due to their high hydrogen storage density. The synthesis of these complex hydrides presents certain complexity because of the lack of stable Mg2Fe and Mg2Co intermetallics. For this reason, a deeper understanding of Mg-Co-H and Mg-Fe-H systems has been gained not later than the synthesis of the pure hydride phases. Herein, it is discussed in detail the major progresses in the synthesis of homoleptic Mg2CoH5 and Mg2FeH6 complex hydrides, the thermodynamic stability and kinetic properties of the Mg-Co-H and Mg-Fe-H systems and further tuning advances. Finally, the main features towards practical applications as hydrogen-energy storage medium and future trends are highlighted.
