The unity of hylomorphic compounds: aim and argument of Metaphysics H6

This paper is organized as follows. In section 2, I will give a framework for H6 in books ZHΘ to better understand its motivation and solution. I will next analyze in section 3 the first half of H6 to outline Aristotle’s alternative to the take that cannot solve the unity of form and definition. This will be supplemented in section 4 by a brief examination of Aristotle’s own parsimonious model to explain that unity in Z12, which provides the pattern for H6’s new issue. In section 5, I will try to clarify the transition from forms to compounds made at the hinge of H6 (1045a25). Finally, I will devote sections 6 and 7 to discuss how does Aristotle works out his solution in the second half of the chapter; and in the closing section 8 I will present some remarks on the theory of the layers of matter.
