Greek geometrical analysis has been traditionally considered as a way of decomposing and reducing complex items into simple ones. However, Aristotle?s use of analysis stresses a different feature: a fact is analysed in full only if one can reach explanatory first principles through syllogistic middles. In this paper I try to show to what extent Aristotle?s use of analysis makes it the very matrix of demonstration, and more particularly I try to show how analysis is of use in discovering principles. From this point of view, I draw a general picture of Aristotle?s theory of science by linking analysis and causal explanation. In an appendix, I finally exemplify my proposal by means of a syllogistic formalization of some arguments in De vetera medicina.
