The association between Islam and violence in thr general portrayal of Muslims by Western media, is equally, if not more, present in other geographical areas, and adopts specific tropes. Regions with visible presence of Muslim immigrants are likely to be interpreted from the perspective of this narrative, as has been described by Said in his important work Covering Islam. Based on fieldwork on Muslim communities in the tri-border region of Brasil-Argentina-Paraguay, as well as analysis of new stories published in the UNited States media, this chapter attempst to shed light on the micro level at wich islamophobia operates.
