The Publishing of social and human sciences in Argentina. A translation of the transnational field of social sciences and humanities??

Between 1990 and 2011, 1800 SSH titles by French authors and 800 by American and English authors were translated in Argentina. Taking into account recent research results, one could say that during this period Argentina published twice titles of French origin than in both British and American publishing markets. Moreover, if between 2005 and 2009, 608 titles by French authors were translated to Castilian in Argentina, between 2004 and 2011 in France only 10 books of Argentine authors in humanities and social sciences were translated. These data suggest that the transnational field of SSH (its inequality, the competition between power centers, the nature of center-periphery type relationships, etc.) can be partially represented by the translation of books on the international book market. The variety and volume of books translated in a particular academic and cultural space is an evidence between others of the hierarchical structure of the transnational field of SSH and how this field is relative to particular national and linguistic spaces. In this paper we analyze the vitality of the SSH publishing market in Argentina, with special emphasis on the translation between 1990 and 2011. In the multipolar publishing space traced by Castilian language, Argentina has a leadership role as a place of SSH translation. Our presentation will discuss the partial results of a comparative statistical study of translations from French, English, German, Italian and Portuguese. If translation is an indicator of internationalization and universalzation of knowledge, a systematic study of this practice is a central vehicle for discussing disputes between knowledge production centers. Among other factors, will seek to think the "central" place that may have some "peripheral" places like Argentina for the comprehension of the power structures and struggles in the transnational field of SSH. In Part I Gustavo Sorá will expose the general analytical framework that leads to the construction of the object of knowledge with special emphasis on the articulation between national and transnational dimensions. In Part II Alejandro Dujovne advance on the results of the statistical studies performed. Not being possible to circumscribe the explanation of the international flow of ideas by only bi-national relationships, our study focus data, assumptions and interpretations of the translations in Argentina from the French, English, German, Italian and Portuguese. Dujovne will also extend the interpretation of the Argentine case to some contrasts within the multinational Spanish American book market.
