Resumen:
The mitochondrial production of nitric oxide (NO) was originally described in rat liver, by Ghafourifar and Richter (1997) and by Guilivi et al (1998). Later on, NO production was reported in brain, thymus and heart mitochondria. The enzyme responsible for NO production in mitochondria (mtNOS) is biochemically similar to other nitric oxide synthases. It was recognized that mtNOS activity can be modulated pharmacologically in brain, liver, kidney and heart.
